Apr. 19. Jesus Teaches about Prayer

Lk. 11:1-13

Jewish rabbis gave their disciples forms of prayer which were to teach them how to pray. Jesus had previously given instructions for prayer in the sermon on the mount. His disciples thought that they needed more teaching and asked Him again to teach them to pray.

Some of the points in the model prayer that Jesus taught recognized the deity of God and that we are His children. If one is not committed to obeying God as He is obeyed in heaven, he should not expect Him to hear his prayer. Disciples should trust in Him to care for their daily needs, both physical and spiritual. A person however cannot expect his sins to be forgiven if he is unwilling to forgive those who sin against him. Jesus also taught that we should pray for deliverance from temptation and the tempter. Prayer should be persistent but be delivered to God according to His will.

Many people traveled at night to avoid the heat of the day. Jesus taught that if a selfish man would give food to a hungry traveler late at night and an evil man would give good gifts to his children, God who is generous would give to His people who ask, the best of all gifts, the Holy Spirit.
