As Jesus had done many times, He was teaching in a synagogue on a Sabbath when He saw a woman who had been handicapped with a severe body deformity for eighteen years. He called her to Himself and said, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” Observe that the woman had to come to Jesus to receive this blessing.
The ruler of the synagogue spoke to the crowd instead of Jesus because He had healed the woman on the Sabbath. Jesus called him a hypocrite because of the great difference between healing the woman and their practice of watering their animals on the Sabbath.
He had blessed a woman instead of an animal and had freed her from a disease instead of a stall. This put the ruler to shame and pleased the people.
