Rising Joy by Vicki Matheny
Then all the people of the Gerasenes and the surrounding region asked Jesus to leave them alone, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and left. Luke 8.37
Are you fearful? People react in different ways to fear. Some are motivated to move and get things done. Others are paralyzed and can only sit with dread watching as events occur.
In Luke 8.26-39, Jesus had healed a man who was possessed by many demons. For a long time, this man had worn no clothes and had lived among the tombs. At times, this man had been shackled and kept under guard. But he would break the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places. Jesus had allowed the demons to go into a herd of pigs which had resulted in their death. The herdsmen saw what had happened and ran off, spreading the news in the town and countryside.
You would think that the townspeople would be happy that this man had been cured of this horrible possession. However, when they saw the man sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind, they were afraid. Instead of learning from the one who had saved this man from his fate, they allowed their fear to get the better of them and they asked Jesus to leave them alone. So Jesus left.
Of what are you afraid? Of change? Of sharing about Jesus with others? Of how Jesus may drastically change your life if you obey him? Paul told Timothy that God does not give us a Spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-control, 2 Timothy 1.7. Allow you love for God to overcome your fear.
