Art? – JAM

What is art today? A few years ago the University of Illinois at Chicago displayed paintings by Douglas Van Dyke that were clearly anti-Christian. One depicted Mary, the mother of Jesus, seated on a toilet seat, urinating on consecrated communion hosts. Another depicted the pope as a devil or jester; priests murdering people with axes; and a crucifixion scene in which Jesus had the head of a pig. James Overlock, director of campus auxiliary services defended it: “If we cannot show this, we are not a university.” When that which is sacred and holy is held in such contempt and blasphemy, it is time for Christians to protest long and loud.
