Rising Joy by Vicki Matheny
But now Jesus has obtained a superior ministry, since the covenant that he mediates is also better and is enacted on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, no one would have looked for a second one. Hebrews 8.6-7
Better. This word is used to describe the covenant that Jesus mediates as well as the promises on which it is enacted. What makes it better?
Jesus was the perfect sacrifice. He had no sin of his own, therefore he was able to be our sacrifice, perfect, without blemish.
The new covenant is about relationship, our relationship to God. We can go before God’s throne and make our petitions known. We can know and understand who God is and what he wants of his people. We have to have this understanding to be able to obey him and become a part of his kingdom.
Jesus is the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, Hebrews 5.9. We can go directly to the source and learn from him all that we need to know.
It gives us a purpose. Jesus gave a commission to his disciples before his return to heaven. His disciples are to teach others the good news making new disciples, Matthew 28.19-20.
