1. Just as John’s second epistle is better known for a particular passage within, so is John’s third epistle. This letter is better known for the man Diotrephes, so much so that it has come to be a code word for those who are instigating trouble with in the local church.
2. However, within the epistle are two men the Holy Spirit regards favorably: Gaius and Demetrius, men who walk in the truth and who support those who do the same. Let me emphasize a significant point that many local churches want to overlook, and that is the importance of missions.
3. The Lord’s church is to be an evangelistic church; they are to support the evangelistic effort of its own (local) and of those who have carried the message abroad (mission fields). Let us remember this two-pronged thrust in our prayers.
