The Prologue to the Gospel (1:1-18). The author introduces several key terms: Word, Life, Light, Sent, Witness, Testify, Believe, and World. These terms are fundamental to an understanding of John’s Gospel. With the exception of the term “Word,” each key term will develop as one continues to examine this book.
Early Testimony (1:19-51). In their own way, John the Baptist, Andrew, Philip and Nathanael testify that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. As testimony is given, Jesus is described as the Lamb of God (29, 36); Son of God (34, 49); Messiah/Christ (41); the one that Moses and the prophets wrote about (45); King of Israel (49); and Son of Man (51).
