This chapter describes Jesus as “the resurrection and the life” (11:25). Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead effectively illustrates this claim (11:43-44). The purpose of this sign, as with previous signs, was to create faith in those who witnessed these things (11:45), and ultimately, faith in those who would hear or read the testimony of eyewitnesses (17:20-21; 20:29-31).
Amazingly, even the Jewish leaders recognized that if Jesus continued to perform signs everyone would believe in him (11:48). However, instead of the following the evidence, they planned together to kill him (11:49-53). How long would these people refuse to believe in Jesus? Then again, how long will you refuse to believe?
