Blessed Assurance

We sing a song with this title. In that song we sing “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.” Living in a world that assures of nothing but ‘death and taxes’, it should be comforting to us to know that indeed in Christ we do have assurances.

There is assurance that there will always be forgiveness of sins to those submitting their life to God. Scriptures tell us that the penalty of sin is death (Romans 6:23) yet 1 John 1:7 assures us that “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

God also assures us that the righteous will be raised from the dead. Paul in writing to the Corinthians says “And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power” (1 Cor. 6:14). Jesus also confirmed this by telling the disciples that “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” (John 14:3).

We also have assurance that when leaving this earth all our troubles will be over. Revelation 21:4 provides an excellent description of what we can expect in heaven: “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” There are many of us with chronic physical problems that find this passage especially comforting. Not only will we get to be in the presence of God, but will do so without the distractions of pain and sickness..

God created this world perfectly (Genesis 1). In its original state, there was no pain, no suffering of any kind, and no sin. Man’s downfall came when sin entered (Genesis 3:6-19) the world. But “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift” (2 Cor. 9:15). Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
