Many like buffet restaurants that give us a good excuse to eat as much of our favorite foods as we want. We pick and choose what we like while rejecting what we don’t like.
That’s how most think of Christianity—that Jesus is the vine and denominations are the branches. We think it picky to point out teachings that oppose other groups or the Bible because if you don’t like a particular dish, just load up your plate from another.
But Jesus’ church that He promised to build and is head over is singular in nature, bought with His blood for His only bride. He is the vine, yes, but the branches are those who abide in Him. They are those throughout the centuries who, like noble-minded Bereans, have studied His Word, believed in Him, obeyed His gospel, and are living a life worthy in Him.
The church of Christ (Romans 16:16) is made up of those from many religions and denominations who through faith have forsaken all others to clothe themselves with Christ in baptism (Galatians 3:26-27).

[During 2013, I did a restoration lesson on every fifth Sunday, calling people back to the church of Christ as revealed in God’s Word. This lesson scheduled for 12/29 was never delivered as snow cancelled our services on 12/22 and that lesson was already written. So, during the first fifth Sunday of 2014, here is my topic.]
