Clapping

What are your views on clapping in worship? After baptism? During VBS?

Not a place for it during worship. It ‘s OK in my opinion after a baptism, but not during. During VBS, I have no preference or opinion. Now as to why, one word, reverence. There are times when reverence is called for and times it’s not. During worship and a baptism it’s called for, after a baptism is the time to celebrate. As for VBS, most of the time reverence is not called for.

Someone has been saved from the eternal fires of hell when they have been baptized into Christ! That is a reason for rejoicing, even as the angels do according to Luke 15. How do we rejoice?

  We say amen, rejoice in our hearts and sing a joyous song. That seems far more joyous than clapping.

    It is interesting to me that in Restoration history you find that on several occasions, instrumental music made its way into the worship of the church after the instrument being introduced into Bible classes. When those students grew up, the instrument moved into prominence. Would the “slippery slope” argument apply to clapping in VBS or at a baptism? It may not have any validity at all. Or, then again, it may.
    
    If we consider that we have lost so many youth groups and college student centers to liberalism, it makes you wonder. They are all toying with clapping and praise teams and other forms of entertainment. Where did it come from?
    
    I took some teens to a youth rally years ago. Willie Franklin [former NFL player] was the speaker. The local youth group had the entire situation as a set-up, which was readily apparent. Franklin was going to end his time with a Q&A after lunch. The last song before the session was Father Abraham, which included a smattering of clapping. Then the first three questions to Franklin were pro-clapping. Franklin resisted them and when it was over he left and our kids did too, as well. He thought it was clear there was a larger agenda at work there. The preacher was gone in no time. Coincidence? Hmmm
    
    Franklin told them that our worship is to be spiritual and that clapping was physical. But, wouldn’t singing? Or, does his argument hold water?
    
    Is clapping after baptism a dangerous area that can open the door to something that won’t stay seated? If it is true, as some have said, that there is nothing Scripturally wrong with clapping after a baptism, is it nonethless unwise?

    And how does clapping teach and admonish? If not, what purpose does it serve in our worship? Does it pull our minds away from God and onto the performer?
