Dec. 23. Salvation Through Christ Is God’s Gift to Man

I Jn. 5:1-21

The apostle stated, “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God…” If one is born of God, he will truly love Him and all others who are born of Him. This love for God and His children is made known by one’s continual obedience to His commandments. Undying faith of Christians will overcome the world and its evils.

John reminded his readers that the Holy Spirit introduced Jesus to the world at His baptism in water. He was further revealed as He shed His blood on the cross. Not only did the Spirit reveal Jesus as the Son of God, but Jesus identified Himself as the Son and God confirmed that fact. God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit: all three agree as one that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God!

According to John, man may deny the deity and even the existence of Jesus, but that cannot refute the facts as related by the inspired word from God through the Holy Spirit. God is much greater than man. To deny the Son of God rejects God and implies that His complete word as false. He further reaffirmed that one who believes in the name of the Son of God may know that he has eternal life.

The apostle reminded his readers of the power of acceptable prayer. To be acceptable, prayer must be according to God’s will—not through greed or selfishness. God will not grant a request that is not good for that person.

There are many references to sin in John’s letter. All of God’s children sin at times. It is the responsibility of each Christian to pray for others as they confess and repent of those sins. God has promised to forgive a penitent sinner, but one who refuses to turn from his sins will not be forgiven even though his fellow Christians pray for his forgiveness. When one is reborn through baptism, he turns his back on sin and guards himself from the temptations of the devil.

John ended his letter with a warning to flee from idols.
