Nothing like getting it directly from the source. In matters of the spirit, we can be content with nothing else.
Faith comes by hearing the word of Christ, unmediated by human interpretation. A happy result of Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman is this word of the townspeople to her:
They said to the woman, “No longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this one really is the Savior of the world” Jn 4.42.
Lest we think that such an option is not available to us today, we need only recall that the New Testament is Christ’s word. We will not hear him in dreams or visions, but in reading the new-covenant writings. He sent the Spirit to speak of him to the apostles and prophets, and what they wrote he spoke.
Let us not be content to believe what others say about Jesus. Let us hear him for ourselves. And so we shall know that he really is the Savior of the world, and of our souls.
