Have you heard that question before? It is likely you have, or some variation of it. How do you answer? Here is a conversation that is not that far from something that might actually take place.
“Do I have to be a member of your church to go to heaven?”
“I don’t have a church.”
“You know what I mean! I am talking about the church where you attend.”
“Why don’t we sit down and study the Bible on the topic?”
“I don’t have that kind of time!”
“Oh, so you are not really interested in learning, you just want to level a ‘broad-side’ accusation-question with no real interest in learning?”
“No! I genuinely want to know, but I just don’t have time to sit and talk about it.”
“Okay, I will give you a biblical answer, and encourage you to take time to study it on your own. Here is what Paul said,
- “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all” (Eph. 1:22-23).
- “Jesus is the head of His church, Paul calling it His body. Moreover, in the same book, a few chapters later, the apostle of the Lord said there is only one body, thus there is only one church (Ephesians 4:4). The church I want to be a member of is the Lord’s church.”
Again, from the apostle Paul, the Holy Spirit said “For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her [his body, his church], that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word” (Eph. 5:24-26, ESV).
“Jesus is called the savior of the body; he is not the savior of those outside the body, but the savior of His body, His church.”
“So, the answer to your question is this: I want to be a member of the Lord’s church, the Lord’s body, for He is the savior of that body, and of no other. Wouldn’t you want to be a member of the same?” RT
