Do we need a new December holiday Though…

Do we need a new December holiday? Though no one really knows for sure what day Jesus was born, December 25th has been celebrated as Jesus’ birthday. Observance began in the fourth century. Pagans already had a mid-winter festival offering a break from the harsh winter weather. If these pagans were to be converted, Christians reasoned they needed to offer a substitute. Giving up their gods was easier than giving up their parties. Thus the holiday was born. But the question today is: does Christmas call to mind the birth of a Savior or the beginning of sales? When Christmas is more commercial than spiritual, more about economic recovery than about Jesus Christ; when the only jingle bells are from the cash registers and we think that Joy to the World comes gift-wrapped under the tree; we’ve gone full circuit! Once again it is a pagan holiday. This is Just-a-Minute with Ed Boggess
