In the Bible, signs were used to communicate something. D. R. Dungan, in his landmark work, “Hermeneutics,” discusses material symbols in the Bible as an effort by God to teach man some truth.
What truth could God communicate in an earthquake, meteor, or volcanic eruption that has not already been addressed by his word in the Bible?
It may be that the earth is trying to tell us something (in a way). The earth was never meant to be the permanent home of human beings. The earth, because it is material, ages and will continue to “act her age” as it does what it has done for many millennia. It will continue to shake, rattle and roll until it is destroyed by the one who created it.
That task of destruction is appointed to God, not to natural processes (1 Thessalonians 4:16ff; 2 Peter 3:7-12).
