What gets my eyes rolling upward again and again, is observing members of the Lord’s church who remain woefully (and sometimes I believe willingly) ignorant of Bible knowledge after being in the Lord’s church for 20-30-40-50 years or more. One reason they remain ignorant, is simply because they do not bring a Bible to Bible class (and if they do bring one, they don’t open it up).
My question is, “Where has the enthusiasm to study God’s word gone?” (Psalm 1:1-2; Nehemiah 8:1-12). Isn’t Bible study a “good work?” (note “zealous of” – Titus 2:14).
Sometimes when I ask members of our adult Bible class to read the text that we are studying, it’s almost like pulling teeth for someone to speak up and participate.
Perhaps one of the reasons as to why members of the church do not study the Scriptures more, is simply because we have grown very lazy in our affluent and technologically advanced society – so much so, that if something doesn’t happen instantaneously, we become upset and go on to something more entertaining.
Some members may also have the mindset of allowing the preacher do their studying for them (after all, that’s one of the reasons why we pay him, right?”). 🙂
If I read Psalm 1:1-2 and 2 Timothy 2:15 ASV-1901 correctly (“give diligence to”), I don’t believe God is going to “spoon-feed” us into heaven – we’re going to have to diligently “feed” on God’s word ourselves (every member participating in the growth and development of the body – Ephesians 4:11-16), and then “do” what it says do (Matthew 4:4; cf. Deuteronomy 8:3; James 1:17-25).
