During the life of Christ, widows were greatly dependent upon their sons or other men in their families. The next day after healing the centurion’s servant, Jesus was in the city of Nain, about twenty miles south of Capernaum. He met a funeral procession as He entered town. The only son of a widow had died.
While in Jerusalem, Jesus had informed the people that He would raise the dead and this was His opportunity to do just that. He had great compassion on the widow and told her not to weep. At that time, He touched the open coffin and said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
The young man sat up and began to speak. Great fear came upon the people and they began to spread the word all around saying that a great prophet had risen up among them.
