Mt. 9:9; Mk. 2:13, 14; Lk. 5:27, 28
The Sea of Galilee was another one of the places where Jesus frequently taught. As He walked along the shore one day, He saw Matthew, a Publican in his tax office.
Publicans were tax collectors and because of the nature of their job and the corruptness of many, they were hated by the people of that day. Jesus chose as His disciples common men and Matthew, who was also called Levi was one of those men He selected.
