God’s prophet said it plainly so long ago – the Lord hates divorce (Malachi 2:16).
But why? The answer is because he loves people.
Marriage is a holy relationship; a relationship that is meant to be beneficial to all persons involved…including the proceeding children.
And yet, when this relationship is severed, hurt soon follows. All parties hurt whether they realize it or not. Spiritually, emotionally, mentally. Old and young alike. Some choices may mask the pain, but the damage will be done regardless.
Because of its cost, divorce needs to be avoided at all costs! Yes, the Lord provides an exception, and only one stated exception, to his expectation when it comes to the duration of the marriage that we enter into (Matthew 19:9), but even then the decision should be made prayerfully and carefully. In the case of a betrayal, the innocent party retains his or her rights to make a choice, in accordance with the will of the marriage institution’s creator. But during that decision making period, even the innocent party will discover why the Lord hates divorce. And during that time, the guilty party will have to remain open to the possibility of incurring a lifetime consequence.
When it comes to serious marriage woes, the people doing wrong need to be warned and the people being wronged need to be supported. Help needs to be offered. And everyone needs to remember how God feels about divorce and why he feels that way, because it can help us prevent the warnings and the support and the help that will unfortunately need to be given far too often.
“So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”” (Matthew 19:6 – NKJV)
