One of the most touching encounters with an angel in scripture is in Genesis 16.
Hagar had just suffered harsh treatment at the hand of her mistress, Sarai, and she fled. An angel came to her as she sat near a spring in the desert. “And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai,” (Genesis 16:8 ESV).
Certainly God knew where Hagar had been and where she was going, but Hagar may not have. The question was asked to give Hagar a chance to think. Evidently, Hagar had the first part of the answer, but didn’t know where she was going. Apparently, she wasn’t going anywhere.
Isn’t it wonderful to know God cares where we’re going? So many are lost and don’t know. God knows. God cares and wants us to go the right way.
Hagar was told by the angel she had a future. Perhaps one of the cares Hagar bore was what she was going to do now that she’s homeless. God had the solution: go back to your mistress and give birth to a son that will father many nations. God has the solution for every problem. He is willing to point out our future if we are willing to listen.
