A Special Independence Day Edition
EQUALITY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
Today our country celebrates the 238th year of its independence. The Declaration of Independence says: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Clearly, every right-thinking citizen agrees with these sentiments.
It is my conviction that everyone is indeed created equal by and in the sight of Almighty God. Maintaining equality and being happy requires, well, pursuit! “Pursuit” indicates (and requires) initiative, aggressiveness, being proactive, and engaging in productive work. It is the opposite of feeling “entitled”!
Many hard-working, law-abiding Americans are tired of the increasing number of people who sit on their rear ends and refuse to do anything to provide either for themselves or their families. We are tired of subsidizing unmarried women to have children by a multiplicity of men. We are tired of providing free cell phones for each member of a non-productive family, rent subsidy, free health care, food stamps, utilities subsidies, free computers and internet connection, free food (school breakfasts and lunches, and often dinners by some charitable agency), free clothing, free air conditioners in the summertime, and free gifts at Christmas for people who can but won’t work!
When people load their grocery carts with beer, wine, and cigarettes, and then “pay” for their groceries with food stamps, all while some hard-working husband and wife stand behind them in the check-out line at the supermarket and observe what is going on, it is more than enough to cause anger and resentment.
When people’s arms, hands, legs, and ankles (and that is only the more visible body parts, with some of the other parts often made more visible than decent people care to see) are covered with tattoos, and their ears, eyebrows, noses, lips, and tongues are bedecked with studs and rings, but they are “buying” their groceries with food stamps, no wonder tax-paying citizens are highly enraged and outraged!
When the borders of our country are being flooded with illegal aliens and diseased, lice-laced children, and the United States takes them in to feed, clothe, educate, provide health care, as well as a host of other benefits, all in the name of “equality” and “the pursuit of happiness,” no wonder some citizens are on the verge of rebellion.
Social, political, and religious liberals like to tout the separation of Church and State, but only when it is to their advantage to do so. They do not hold to that concept across the board. The Bible teaches that pure religion consists of helping the poor, the fatherless, the widows, the sick, the downtrodden, and the outcasts of society. But all of that is the responsibility of individuals and religious entities! It is NOT the responsibility of the government! Yet our government spends (and wastes!) billions of dollars in entitlement programs every year, all in the name of “equality” and “the pursuit of happiness” for those who in many instances will not make any personal effort to “pursue” (strive, work for) those things that result in equality and happiness for themselves. Tax-paying citizens are being forced by the government to engage in religious works of charity! But if someone speaks out in opposition to these things, he or she is considered a racist, a bigot, or as being insensitive to the needs of others. Go figure!
