Hugh's News & Views ("Nots" In The Devil's Tale)

When God created Adam and Eve and placed them in the garden of Eden, He said to them, “Of every tree of the garden you may eat; but of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17). Later, Satan, in the form of a serpent, approached Eve and said to her, “You will NOT surely die” (Genesis 3:4). (Note: Satan was the world’s first “change agent,” changing God’s word by adding only one word to what God had said, but in so doing he changed the word of God to the opposite of what the Lord had actually said.)

Eve believed the devil’s tale and ate of the forbidden tree. The Bible says, “She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate” (verse 6). As a result, they suffered the consequences of their disobedience. From that time until now, Satan has been inserting “NOTS” into God’s clear statements in an effort to counteract God’s word and lead people away from the Lord’s way and into the devil’s way.

Consider some of the “NOTS” in the devil’s modern tale.

Christ is NOT the only way to God the Father (John 14:6)

There is NOT just one body (church) (Ephesians 4:4; Colossians 1:18)

One can NOT be just a Christian without also being a member of some denomination (Acts 11:26; I Peter 4:16)

Denominationalism is NOT wrong (John 17:20-21; I Corinthians 1:10-13)

He who believes and is NOT baptized shall be saved (Mark 16:16)

Baptism does NOT now save us (I Peter 3:21)

There is NOT just one baptism (Ephesians 4:5)

There is NOT just one “mode” of baptism (Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12)

God is NOT concerned about what you believe as long as you are sincere (Matthew 7:21-23)

The church you belong to does NOT matter (Matthew 15:13; Matthew 16:18)

You do NOT have to be a member of the church Christ established in order to be saved (Acts 2:47; Ephesians 5:23)

There is NOT just one way to heaven (Matthew 7:13-14)

God does NOT care how you worship as long as you are sincere (John 4:24; Acts 2:42)

You do NOT have to attend church regularly (Acts 2:42; Hebrews 10:15)

You do NOT have to partake of the Lord’s Supper every Sunday (Acts 20:7)

Instrumental music in worship is NOT wrong (Colossians 3:16-17)

It is NOT wrong for women to preach and serve as elders in the church (I Corinthians 14:34; I Timothy 2:11-14)

There is NOT just one scriptural (acceptable) reason for divorce and remarriage (Matthew 19:9; Romans 7:2-3)

A child of God can NOT fall from grace and be eternally lost (I Corinthians 10:12; Galatians 5:4; Hebrews 3:12)

Hell does NOT consist of eternal punishment (Matthew 25:46)

Do not let Satan fool you with his “NOTS.” “But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ” (II Corinthians 11:3).
