Rising Joy by Vicki Matheny
These are all destined to perish with use, founded as they are on human commands and teachings. Colossians 2.22
Why is it so important to know the scriptures? Some people have been taught a list of Do’s and Don’ts. Such lists are merely human commands and teachings. Do this and don’t do that has an appearance of wisdom. However, it is of no true value for it is based upon human teachings, Colossians 2.21-23. As a Christian, I have to learn to discern what comes from God and what comes from some human idea as it pertains to my spiritual well-being.
This is not a new problem although it has been amplified today. There are hundreds of different religious beliefs in the world with many of them claiming to lead one to God. However, upon examination, the teachings are not based upon Bible principles. Instead, they are based upon the teachings of men or of traditions. Jesus made it very clear that obedience to God is the only thing that is of importance and that trying to put man’s traditions before God’s word is vain worship and not acceptable, Mark 7.6-8.
So where should you put your effort? Your focus is important! You must seek the things that are above, where Christ is, Colossians 3.1. For the Christian, Christ is your life. You must put off whatever in your nature causes you to disobey God. You must not conform to the present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, Romans 12.2.
The renewing of your mind comes from God’s word. Knowing God’s word and obeying it is the most important and beneficial thing that you can do. Read it! Study it! Obey it!
