I live in Franklin County, Tennessee, about 85 miles southeast of Nashville. It borders the Alabama line. Our country is embroiled in a controversy raised by an outside organization: Freedom From Religion Foundation. Who would have guessed that our school system would be targeted by this organization to attack what small remnants of expressing faith that still are practiced. Their attorney wrote claiming that beginning PTO meetings with a prayer should be banned. Moreover, the complaint included a memo sent to parents by one school that said, “Merry CHRISTmas” and the “real reason for the season”. For years I have heard of such things happening here and there across the country, now it has come home to where I live. The organization has only 20,000 members nationwide, but it has deep pockets! Franklin County has around 44,000 population. How can an outside organization (Madison, Wisconsin) made up of less than half the counties’ population have so much swagger that they can dictate what Franklin County schools can and can’t do?
