In my mind for a sport to qualify as a pastime, it should have very few rules and be lots of fun. That eliminates most games since they have become complicated and basically have become just more work. I want a game to be a diversion not another headache.
We played a yard version of Bocce ball when the kids were growing up. If your not familiar with it, think of think croquet meets horseshoes minus the mallets, wickets, and stakes. It met my view of a great game—few rules and lots of fun.
Living just outside the predominantly German-Italian community of Roanoke, IL, we often see the old Italians taking their game all over town once it warms up. It’s on those summer days I long to be Italian at least for a day.
