Throughout the scriptures the people of God showed respect toward the name of God, but even when they didn’t show respect the demand for respect didn’t change (Leviticus 24:16, Romans 2:1-4, 24).
Long before text messaging abbreviations were invented the name of God was reduced to a byword among some, but like today God took note of those who honored his name and of those who showed contempt:
“For thus says the Lord God: “My people went down at first Into Egypt to dwell there; then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. Now therefore, what have I here,” says the Lord, “That My people are taken away for nothing? Those who rule over them make them wail,” says the Lord, “And My name is blasphemed continually every day. Therefore My people shall know My name; therefore they shall know in that day that I am He who speaks: ‘Behold, it is I.’”” (Isaiah 52:4-6)
As our culture continues its attempt to hollow out the name of God, the kingdom of God must continue to hallow his name, and we must do this not for God’s sake but for our own.
“…Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.” (Matthew 6:9 – NKJV)
