Mt. 1:1-17; Lk. 3:23-38
Genealogy was important to the Jews. The priests were descendants of the tribe of Levi. Matthew traced the genealogy of Christ forward from Abraham through Joseph, the husband of Mary. Luke began with Joseph and traced backward to Adam. One of the problems the Jews had in accepting the divinity of Jesus was His ancestry. Instead of descending through the priestly tribe of Levi, Jesus the Son of God had His earthly descent through Judah.
