God had previously promised Abram a great nation, but he questioned God how this could be. God had said that an heir would come from his own body. His descendants would be as numberless as the stars in the heavens. “And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.”
Abram was instructed to bring an animal sacrifice to God in order to receive confirmation of God’s covenant with him. While a deep sleep was upon Abram, God revealed that his descendants would serve and be afflicted four hundred years in a land that was not theirs, but would leave with great possessions. Abram would die at a good old age.
