Jun. 9. Jesus Commissions the Twelve

Mt. 10:1-11:1; Mk. 6:7-13; Lk. 9:1-6

The apostles had been with Jesus for several months observing His miracles and hearing His teaching. It was time for them to go out on their own and to work independently in teams of two.

Jesus called them and gave them the power to cast out unclean spirits, heal all kinds of sickness and disease and to raise the dead.

The apostles were sent to only the lost sheep of Israel (Jews) and their message was, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

They were to travel lightly and to take no provisions with them. The house that was “worthy” in which they stayed would provide for their needs.

Jesus pointed out to them that they would be rejected and persecuted at times, but “…it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah (Old Testament cities destroyed by God) in the day of judgment than for that city!”

After instructing His disciples, Jesus also went into the cities teaching and preaching.
