Law of Moses Brings Law of Grace

This is Don Petty’s email/papers to a select group of saints. I’m throwing him a couple of proposals to either place it here or on a blog. Let’s see which he likes. Am sending this by email to the TFR, by the way. Neat, no? –Randal

UPDATE: Not all text made it into the post. Apparently, WP doesn’t like lines made with dashes. Nor did Don’s bragging photo with great-grandchild. … Have appended the text.

Striving to plant the word of God as widely
as possible and working to teach the word
as Sound Doctrine to all who will hear

Since 2003 the membership of the church in the US
has experienced a significant decline. That is what
inspires me to compose these papers to the “70.”
Let us study our preaching and teaching methods
for opportunities to improve to save members.

To the 70 & Six,
Well, good to see all of you. We today returned from California, where we have been visiting our (now) 8-day old first great grandchild, Teagan. She is as cute a little one as you might hope to see (having MY genes and all).

During the time I have been away (Yeah, I know. Some of you thought I was in a ‘padded’ cell somewhere, but I wasn’t) I have thought about PtOS and have also gotten some input from you about the format and writing. Thus, with that having been said, I want to ask for your input on a three point survey. Here ’tis…

1. Do you think the articles that have been in the PtOS Online paper are too long?
2. Do you think they are about right?
3. Do you think I should divide the paper into two parts – one with the brief, pointed articles and one with longer, feature-type articles?

All right, depending on your answers I will adjust…or not. If I do not hear word strongly that you want change I will stay with the format; otherwise, I will modify. Or…if it is truly one that indicates I need an overhaul to the paper, I will just pick up my dolls and go home!! I play as well alone, anyway, my momma used to tell me. Ha.

Starting this month of July, PtOS will return to distribution, but instead of a weekly online publication, it will now be a monthly online publication. This is to make possible my writing I have in the queue. Along with my weekly writing for an upcoming website, I will now get back to some writing I have had underway for a good while now. I have missed the grind of early morning/late night writing. I will resume the work I began literally years ago of writing on the following books…

1.”Heat Rising in Tehran”
This is the story of our mission work in Pakistan (1960s) and Iran (1970s), when the Shah of Iran was overthrown during the Iran Revolution, and the ‘seeds for 9/11/01 were sown. (Written, being processed for publication)

2. “Trails Across the Earth”
These are the events – good and bad, horrible and rewarding, succeeding and failing – of one family serving God throughout their lifetime. (Outlined and research well underway)

3. “Parabola of Time”
The objective of this book is to make scripture relevant to the philosopher, the scientist, the evolutionist, the avoid agnostic/atheist. Making God’s laws of science meaningful in the light of scripture. (Writing has begun with two fairly long chapters written)

4. “The Professional Minister” / Subtitled “The Preaching Men of God”
This is the view of an ‘outsider’ observing and relating to the work, life, character makeup, challenges, stress and struggles, effectiveness and motivation, of the men in the pulpit and on staff at local congregations. (This one is definitely still a work in progress, as I am studying ministers as closely and as widely, as deeply and as objectively, as I possibly can, given that I was in the mission field five years and served as an elder 10 years;’ but outlines of various chapters and theses have been written for guides.)

5. “America: Starting Over”
Having enjoyed a good deal of study of the history of civilizations and current peoples, I have drawn some conclusions about our great country. The average age of ‘World Powers’ before their demise over the millennia has been 238 years. America celebrates 233 this year. The normal decline of a great civilization occurs when its morals and ethics, faith and principles, productivity and general positive output, caring and natural goodness dies, with a total implosion from within. Excuse me, but did I just describe our tremendous nation?

We are at a point where we have received the invitation from below to the hottest and longest party ever and our national RSVP has not yet been mailed back. Our infighting has grown more intense and more bitter, and it is splitting our country apart. This book will tell how that momentum may be put to positive use in ‘starting over.’ The solution is the objective of this intended work. The work on this 200-page plan has consisted of gathering a philosophy and doctrine of the fundamental concepts of the American Founders in the American Revolution and putting them in a modern day context. The solution is designed to offer satisfaction to both the liberal thinkers and the conservative ones in the unique expression of a new day for our country, which can revitalize it and make the past growth seem slow and small. (This book has been outlined – many times and many ways – but the basic premise is defined and the outline is finished, with the introduction written)

Now, you may ask, “How do you work on so many projects at one time?” Fair enough. When I did research at the Frito-Lay Company, I always had 4 to 6 projects in the works; the company saw to that. The psychology was simple…when the mind is focusing in a certain way work on a certain project, at another time and another mode of thought, work on this other project. That way there was little time for day dreaming or ‘work block’ with nothing coming to the old brain.

Having gone to that lengthy explanation (because I think you are all worth it and will easily understand my motivation in this, I offer this weeks paper for your use. Oh, and don’t forget that you have the delete option at any time.

So, I will be writing a lot of various things over the next 18 months, Lord willing. Thus. I over sincerely solicit your prayers for a successful and productive year and a half in my very rapidly “olding” days.

Okay…on to the paper. Have some interesting things to put on you, and I hope you can leverage them to save some precious souls. Read on….don

A Pregnancy Ends when the Birth Occurs…

When a baby is conceived and born there is a period of ‘preparation,’ then the baby comes and the period of preparation is ended, completed, blotted out, abolished. The pregnancy is over…the promise is fulfilled in the birth. Then the baby begins to execute the promises, but the pregnancy is no more. It has done its job and now the life begins in the new born.

Do any of you see a parallel in that pregnancy and birth with the Old Law and the Law of Grace?

Let’s compare:

Law of Moses      >>>>>>>     Ended with Grace
Pregnancy    >>>>>>>>>>      Completed with the birth
Promise       >>>>>>>>>>>     Reward
Prediction      >>>>>>>>>>     Answered

The pregnancy promises a new life. The life comes and the pregnancy ends. The coming of life from the pregnancy annuls the prenancy, ends the pregnancy, fulfills the promise of the pregnancy. The birth of baby is better than pregnancy. When the Law of Grace (Baby) comes, the pregnancy (Law of Moses) ends. The pregnancy was very important to bring the baby, but the two do not exist together. They are “mutually exclusive.” One does not exist when the other exists. The birth destroys, blots out, abolishes the pregnancy. Okay, redundantly, the point is made.

Yet, the mother is receives care for a while after the birth of the baby. Did the Lord allow the Jews to be ‘cared for’ after the Law of Grace was ushered in?

Colossians 2:14 (Emphatic Diaglott)

Interlineary word for word English translation
14 having blotted out what was written by hand in ordinances which was against us, and has removed it from the midst, having nailed it to the cross.

From that same Diaglott, Matthew 5:17

reads as follows…
17 Think not that I have come to destroy (subvert) the LAW or the PROPHETS: I have come not to subvert, but to establish (fulfill).

And all that makes me ask all you folks again. When did the Lord actually, practically “abolish” or “end” or “destroy” or “subvert” or “blot out the Law?”

Now, why am I persistently asking that question? Because I wonder if you think God gave the Jews a ‘grace period.’ Would He have laid the burden of giving up Judaism and accepting Christ immediately…or would He have allowed them time to

the Good News? How long would it take for all the Jews any where in the world to hear of Christ’s death, burial, resurrection, commission, and ascension? And how long before they heard what happened on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2?

How long before the Law of Moses was no longer an acceptable way to worship and please God after the church was established? Have you considered that it might actually be about 37 years? Yeah…figure that one. dp

Parting thought…

Our concept of a Youth Minister could be strengthened if there were two youth ministers at one congregation…one of them a Youth Evangelism Minister, who would teach evangelism, local and foreign, personal work and mission work to the youth. Then that YEM could lead the youth on campaigns within the community and on foreign actual ‘teaching campaigns.’  dp
