May 16. The Rich Fool

Lk. 12:13-21

As He was teaching, someone in the crowd called on Jesus to help him with an inheritance dispute with his brother. He used this as an opportunity to teach a lesson on covetousness and one’s relationship with riches.

Covetousness is unregulated or unreasonable desire. As an example, Jesus taught a parable about a rich fool. Riches were not condemned, but God’s wrath was for the man’s attitude of laying up treasures for himself and not for God. Notice the words “I” and “my.” This is also a lesson on the use of time and possessions for those who are retired or planning to retire.
