Jesus taught the apostles a parable about talents to show the importance of using one’s resources and abilities in preparation for His coming. A talent was worth about six thousand denarii or wages for six thousand days.
The man in this parable represented Jesus. His servants were followers of Jesus and the talents represented the various abilities of His followers.
Before leaving on a journey, the master gave his three servants five talents, two talents and one talent according to their own ability. They were to be stewards of his money while he was away.
When the master returned, he was pleased with the first two servants because they had worked and had doubled his money. He was highly displeased with the third man because he had buried his talent and had done nothing to increase it. His one talent was taken away and given to the first servant.
