My idol

Rising Joy, by Vicki Matheny

Therefore, I will certainly cut you into pieces at the hands of the prophets; I will certainly kill you in fulfillment of my oracles of judgment; for my judgment will come forth like the light of the dawn. For I delight in faithfulness, not simply in sacrifice; I delight in acknowledging God, not simply in whole burnt offerings. Hosea 6.5, 6

Faithfulness. A term that the Israelites often forgot. We can read in the context surrounding this verse that they had worshipped idols instead of the Lord God. God brings judgment and sends them into exile where they quickly decide that idolatry is not worth it. Until everything is great again. In verse 4, God asks the question, “What am I going to do with you?” I wonder how many times he has asked this of me. An idol can be anything. It can be money. It can be family. If it replaces God as the most important thing in my life, it has become my idol. I become my own idol if I let my selfishness take control. I need to constantly remind myself that God delights in faithfulness. This involves loving God, keeping his commandments, and knowing who he is. It is more than just going through the motions. Better yet, if I love God by obeying him, I will find joy in my knowledge of who his is and how I can please him.
