Not God, but a King

Rising Joy by Vicki Matheny

As far as I am concerned, far be it from me to sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you! I will instruct you in the way that is good and upright. 1 Samuel 12.23

The Israelites had a difficult time remaining faithful to God. They turned aside so often to worship the idols of the nations around them. They even asked for a king to be as the other nations, rejecting God as their king.

God gave them a king, Saul the Benjaminite. However, it was still necessary for the people and the king to continue to obey God to have his blessing. God sent thunder and rain during the wheat harvest to show his disapproval of the request the people had made for a king.

Samuel assured the people that he would continue to pray for them and to teach them. However, he warned them of the dangers of doing evil.

As the people of God, it is just as necessary today, to remain faithful to Him rejecting anything that could serve as an idol and remove Him from the throne of our hearts. Knowledge of the Scriptures is of utmost importance!
