The Israelites had left Rameses in Egypt on the sixteenth day of the first month. That was the day after the Passover in which the first born of Egypt had died during the tenth plague. They had wandered for forty years in a wilderness and camped at many locations, but they were on the threshold of Canaan. During that time all who were more than twenty years of age when they left Egypt had died except Moses, Joshua and Caleb. Moses would also die before they entered the Promised Land.
