Numbers 35

  1. The inheritance for the Levites. They were not given any of the land allotted to the other tribes, but they were given a number of cities within the allotted inheritance of the other tribes. There were 48 cities for the Levites and of the 48, 6 were cities of refuge.
  2. Application: A city of refuge was a place where a man innocent of murder could go until justice could be rendered. We, too, have a “city” of refuge; He is the Lord, and the “institution” that belongs to Him – our refuge – is called the Lord’s church, the church of Christ, the church of God (Hebrews 12:22-23). When giving thought to the “city” that we can go to, it helps us to understand the importance of the Lord body, His church. That is why the Scripture says that there are no saved people outside the church (Ephesians 5:23).
