I Chron. 1:1-9:44
Family lineage was very important to the lives of the Israelites. It was a matter of family pride and historic accuracy to be able to trace oneself to a particular tribe of Israel. After returning from exile, it was also necessary to resettle the various tribal descendants in the lands of their fathers.
Only the descendants of Aaron and his son, Eleazar could serve as priests. Other descendants of Levi were responsible for assisting in temple worship in various capacities.
The tribe of Judah was given prominence because it was through him that the Messiah would come. A brief summary of some of the duties of some of the Levites was included at the end. Importance of the lineage of Saul and David was highlighted at the genealogy’s conclusion.
