To be perfect: Matthew 19.21

“Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’”

Matthew 19.21

Only to the rich young ruler did Jesus give this command. The man could not love God while in possession of his riches. Jesus was applying to him what he had taught in Matthew 5.29-30.

The principle remains: Do not love anything more than God. And if you cannot love God above all else while in possession of something, get rid of it.
