“Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the Lord, both morning and evening sacrifices” Ezra 3:3.
I can think of no better description of what it takes to be a Christian in today’s world. The refined remnant was returning from 70 years of exile. They knew their sin and God’s grace that allowed them to return to Jerusalem that was laid waste.
Wanting to take care of what was most important, they first offered right worship to the Lord.
There was no wall and no temple yet, but in the midst of their enemies, they built an altar on the foundation of the old … and sacrificed! They set a light on a hill for all to see, knowing that those in the darkness hate the light, while they trusted God to be their protection. And the enemies would come.
Oh, how we want the details in our life to be safe and stable first! Build the wall and our homes. Construct the temple and the altar if we have time. And while we trust in ourselves, being certain the bowl is covering our lamps well, we shunt God to a leftover time slot in our lives while asking for His blessing.
Do you seek first His kingdom and His righteousness?
Is your first priority to offer your life as a living sacrifice despite your fear of the peoples around you?
