Scripture, thought, and a prayer on choosing faith over family

He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” (Matthew 10:37 NKJV)

Sharing a like-precious faith with our fleshly family is a luxury not enjoyed by all but it’s a challenge that can be overcome. Jesus personally felt the pressure he warns his disciples about (John 7:5) and his example stands as a symbol of encouragement when it comes to choosing faith over family. Jesus does not forbid us from loving our family – he forbids a love that places any physical relationship above the spiritual. Such sacrifices can be difficult but this is why overcoming such a challenge is no small choice in the sight of the Savior (Matthew 19:27-29).

Father, we pray for the strength to love our family with godliness and to love Jesus with a boldness that our family does not miss. Help us to count the cost of physical relationships and to clearly know the spiritual value of following Jesus. We pray for those who are struggling with these emotions and choices, and that the yoke of Christ would carry their load as they carry their cross. Help us to love our Savior to the extent that he loves us. In Jesus’ name.
