Selfishness, by Glenn Hitchcock

All I can say is, Wow!

In The Trivialization of God, Donald McCullough quotes Freeman Patterson, noted Canadian photographer, describing barriers that prevented him from seeing the best photo possibilities:

“Letting go of the self is an essential precondition to real seeing. When you let go of yourself, you abandon any preconceptions about the subject matter which might cramp you into photographing in a certain, predetermined way. …

“When you let go, new conceptions arise from your direct experience of the subject matter, and new ideas and feelings will guide you as you make pictures.”

In the spiritual life, just as in photography, being preoccupied with self is the greatest barrier to seeing.

My Grandmother would say: “People can’t see the big picture because they make themselves a part of the frame.”

(Col. 3:1-4) If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
