Oh the things you see on the road

Have you heard about the nationally known rap star getting arrested on the Interstate in Tennessee? We (meaning my family) actually saw his bus parked at an old Interstate gas station. I suppose it was waiting for a new driver, or a piggyback ride to the impound station. We didn’t know it was his bus at the time, but you could tell it belonged to someone with more than five figures in the bank. After we heard about the story on social media and the local news, we knew who the bus belonged to.

That same day we saw something that you wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of (see the picture with the shiny thing attached to its barrelAll Business and you’ll get why I’m saying what I’m saying). While the previously mentioned group “lived it up”, this group was spending the weekend working. I know it’s not Veteran’s Day, but thank you to all those who have honorably served America in the armed forces.

On the way home, again on the Interstate, I saw someone changing out a flat tire on the right shoulder of the road. Another car had already pulled over either to help or because they were traveling together; I couldn’t tell which it was…maybe both But the thing that stuck out to me about the situation was the number of vehicles that refused to get over while this guy changed the tire that was on his front driver side of the car. Do the math correctly and you’ll figure it out why that frustrated me – especially if you’ve felt the power of a passing vehicle on the Interstate while sitting on the shoulder. Either the people on the road weren’t paying attention and didn’t see him until they were up on him, or they just didn’t care.

The other day, while driving down the road (this time not on the Interstate) I saw a goat with a stick taped to his horns! If you have any experience with goats then you know why. If you can’t figure it out, ask and I’ll tell you why.

Have you ever thought about the number of stories in the Bible that center around things that happened while someone was on the road? Most people could probably think “The Good Samaritan” rather quickly, but there are actually several of them worth noting for the sake of the lesson that it teaches. Share the ones that come to your mind if you like.

Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.” (Matthew 22:9-10)

    Military brothers and Memorial Day

Senior Airman Jovan Hill, from the Somers Ave. congregation in North Little Rock AR, shares a bit of his experience in his first deployment abroad, with an article in that congregation’s bulletin. Well worth a read for a feel for what Christians go through when serving in the military abroad. Here’s the PDF file: Observer May 29

In that same bulletin, preacher Oran Burt has a touching article, “Remember the Good Things,” about his father-in-law in WWII in the Pacific — Monday is Memorial Day, after all. Stay calm: he has a spiritual application to his point.

The Somers Ave. congregation has a lot of military personnel, located as they are near an Air Force base and a large National Guard installation.
