6-5-2017 Ignorant Bible Critics

“For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion” (Romans 11:25 NKJV). Have you noticed that the people who criticize the Bible know practically nothing of its contents? Bible critics, most of the time, are ignorant of its theme, continuity, or preservation, and are only wise in their own opinion! Many atheists and skeptics, on the other hand, have become Bible-believers when they study what it actually says. “Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O LORD, And that a foolish people has blasphemed Your name” (Psalm 74:18 NKJV). “Let Your mercies come also to me, O LORD-Your salvation according to Your word. So shall I have an answer for him who reproaches me, For I trust in Your word” (Psalm 119:41-42 NKJV).

4-29-2016 Contradictions #5

An example of a Bible contradiction is on The Thinking Atheist, and asked: “Who Did the Angel Speak to Regarding the Birth of Jesus?”  In Matthew 1:20, “an angel of the Lord appeared to him [Joseph] in a dream, saying…’that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit’” (Matthew 1:20 NKJV), concluding, “The angel appeared to Joseph.”  But in Luke 1:28, “the angel Gabriel was sent by God…to a virgin…[whose] name was Mary” (Luke 1:26-27 NKJV), concluding, “The angel spoke to Mary.”  Are you serious?  How about, God spoke to the two people through two angels on two separate occasions?  You mean Atheists are so busy “reasoning,” they can’t even count to two?  Truly, atheists “walk, in the futility of their mind…because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart” (Ephesians 4:17-18 NKJV).

Delusional Jeffs

In the January 24th paper is an article on the life of a community with its religious leader, Warren Jeffs, incarcerated for immoral practices with young girls. Unfortunately, many in the religious community are still deceived that Jeffs speaks for God. “To his followers, roughly estimated to be about 6,000, he is a prophet who speaks for God and can do no wrong.” Because many find their spiritual guidance from a delusional religious man, the religious community is also delusional.

Moreover, there is no foundational difference between a delusional Jeffs and a woman in New Jersey “who put her newborn baby in the middle of a road and set the child on fire” (Herald-Review, 1.18.2015, p. A-3). Moral codes that have an origin in the thinking of man spawn such actions. Of course, a moral code that has its origin in a man like Jeffs is not really all that much different than a moral code put forth by atheists, agnostics, and skeptics (AAS).

Anything that has its origin in man, by the very nature of the case, is a subjective opinion. Thus, one opinion differing from another opinion on the very same topic of discussion allows for both to be right. For instance, one atheist believes there is a universal code of respect for human dignity, but another atheist rejects this out of hand by saying there is no dignity to be given an animal. According to moral codes that have an origin in man – both are right!

This is further illustrated with the following remark: “Claiming there is any standard that is objective and transcendent of man, set forth by God, is plain and simply a lie.”

If there is no objective standard, then standards are subjective. If standards are subjective, then the opinion which belongs to one person is just as right as that which belongs to another – though they are on opposite ends of the same topic (this also applies to actions). One thinks it is wrong to lie, while another thinks it is perfectly acceptable. This is why atheism, in its truest form, produces moral chaos and is devoid of moral substance. Atheists, however, must steal the moral foundation coming from God because they can hardly live with their own!

USA TODAY editorial by Jerry Coyne – JAM

This morning, as usual,  I bought an USA-Today, settled down in the office to read and  brief myself on the latest news. Again, as usual, when I came to “The Forum” (each Monday an invited editorial on religious/spiritual/faith topics) at the end of section A, I was filled with consternation to read another strike against faith in God. The author was Jerry Coyne, a University of Chicago professor in the Ecology and Evolution department. He evidently bears a grudge against God since this was not the first anti-religious editorial he has produced for this paper. Coyne is one of the “New Atheist Movement”, who are committed to aggressively destroying faith wherever they find it. This particular editorial claims that morality is instinctively inherent in our DNA as a result of Darwinian evolution. Coyne affirms that mankind will be just as moral without religious faith as with it. In fact, he declares “a morality based on our genes and our brains . . . is far better”! The tragedy is some folks will believe this one-sided diatribe without looking further. I have been to a country (the former USSR) where atheism reigned for 70 years and viewed its results: it wasn’t pretty! The new Russia is still trying to clean up the moral mess of two generations of godless society! I have studied the pre-Christian world that was dominated by Greek philosophy and ideas: it wasn’t pretty! Aside from the influence of Judaism, it was a world of “might makes right”. Rome was king and everyone else served at their desire—a world of slaves! Women were more of an object to be used than persons to be respected! Demosthenes said, “We have mistresses for pleasure, concubines for day to day needs, and wives to manage the house and have children.” “The right of refusal” was a right of Roman men to reject a newborn baby without consequence, casting it out on the street to die or be taken to a brothel. Gladiators fought wild animals or each other to the death for public entertainment. Many more details of what a society without Christ becomes could be listed, but surely this is sufficient.  Is this the world Coyne longs for? Strip our world of the influences of faith in Jesus Christ and it becomes a cruel, selfish, “every-man-for-himself” existence. Would there be an occasional act of altruism? Perhaps. However, such would occur when “there was no time for calculation”!

Atheists growing in number – JAM

This is Just-a-minute with Ed Boggess. Atheism is on the rise and one reason is their passion to spread cynicism and unbelief. They claim there are biblical examples of God being unjust and capricious. But there is a fundamental difference between believers and atheists in the way they treat the Bible. A skeptic searches for any Bible example for which there is no apparent explanation (in spite of many others for which there is adequate explanation) and finding one, he declares he is justified in whatever charge he brings against God and his own faithlessness. On the other hand, a believer searches the Bible examples and finds adequate explanations for many and on that basis chooses to trust that God is wise, just and good in those he cannot explain and that he is vindicated in his choice of faith. As for me and my household, I choose faith.

21% of Atheists Believe in God!

Richard Mansel sent me a link that he thought was interesting. He would like to say a word or two about it, but is overwhelmed with work to such a degree that he could not justify the time away. He thought I might say a word or two.

It is beyond amazement that 21% of the atheists asked believe in God! Just think about that for a moment: since 21% of the atheists who answered the survey question believe in God, are they now….well, what would they be?

It does go to point out that confusion is the operative word in much of society. To add to the illustration of confusion, 55% of those identified as agnostic believe in God! The remarkable nature of this is in the meaning of the words of those self-described atheists and agnostics. An atheist is, literally, non-God, or one who denies the existence of God. An agnostic is one who suspends judgment as to whether there is or is not a God.

What can be made of this? At the very least, we can conclude that some words are used by people with no understanding as to meaning. Let us make an application: are we using words that we do not understand the meanings to?

Atheism vs God – JAM

Let’s get one thing straight – both atheists and Christians believe that the universe had a beginning whether by creation or by “the big bang”. That everything had a beginning is a matter of physics; but why it began is a matter of meta-physics. The first is the realm of science, the second of religion. In Steven Hawking’s latest book, The Grand Design, he argues that the laws of gravity and quantum theory justify the conclusion that a universe can spontaneously appear from nothing. However a reading of his reasoning leaves one with a feeling that something is not just right. For one thing gravity cannot exist without mass and quantum theory is about interaction between energy and matter. Both are about that which already exists; neither offers any application to that which did not exist. This is Just-A-Minute with Ed Boggess
