9-3-2015 “I Know I’m Saved”

Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:15-16 NKJV). Some people contradict this by saying, “But I know I’m saved before I was baptized.” Really? How? Scripture says: “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him” (1 John 2:3-5 NKJV). No one can “know” they are saved, unless they have believed and been baptized in order to be saved.

8-11-2015 The Israelites’ Example

God delivered the Israelites from Egyptian slavery, leading them through Moses. “By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land(Hebrews 11:29 NKJV). The Apostle Paul said they “all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea” (1 Corinthians 10:2 NKJV). But they refused to enter the Promised Land, and rebelled against God. Concerning those “twenty years old and above” (Numbers 14:29), God swore “that they would not enter His rest…who did not obey…So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief” (Hebrews 3:18-19 NKJV). (1) No one was saved without being baptized; (2) Baptized believers could become unbelievers; (3) “Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience” (Hebrews 4:11 NKJV). No “once-saved-always saved” here!

7-3-2015 Sin is Sin

No one asked Jesus, “Whose sin is greatest?” But we know the answer: someone else’s! Jesus said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man” (Mark 7:20-23 NKJV). Is morality what we don’t do? We don’t murder, but commit adultery? We don’t steal, but we covet? We’re not wicked, but are full of pride? No one’s sin is worse than ours, “because all sinned” (Romans 5:12 NKJV). Temptations are “common to man” (1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV), and so is sin! Jesus said: “preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:15-16 NKJV).

7-1-2015 Homosexuals in Church?

Are there homosexuals in the church of Christ? Absolutely! The church of Christ in Corinth had members who once were : fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, homosexuals, sodomites, thieves, covetous, drunkards, revilers, extortioners. The church of Christ began with murderers of Jesus Christ who were told to: “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38 NKJV). When they obeyed, “the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47 NKJV). The church of Christ is made up of all kinds of sinners – who have repented. Paul reminded the Corinthians: “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11 NKJV).

6-26-2015 The Summer Drought

Early into Summer, we’re already hearing what to do for the drought conditions we’re having. No one can do without water: not plants, nor animals, nor people. God prophesied to the corrupted Northern Kingdom of Israel through Amos, “’Behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the LORD’” (Amos 8:11 NKJV). “Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink’” (John 7:37 NKJV). After His resurrection, He said, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16 NKJV). Many people have been kept from the water Jesus commands, and are in a drought.

6-24-2015 Let’s Come Together

When tragedy strikes, whether natural (such as tornado, hurricane, earthquake, or volcano), man-made (such as automobile wrecks, construction failures, or industrial disasters), or evil-doings (such as mass murders, beheadings, rapes, abuse or neglect of children, or abortions), people call for everyone to “come together” and share in the grief and concern. Isn’t that what the church of Christ is all about? Those who obey the Gospel of Christ are added to His church for worship of God and fellowship with one another. “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body” (1 Corinthians 12:13 NKJV). “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7 NKJV). 6-8-2015 Are You Double-Minded?

Prayers from a doubting heart don’t work. “For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (James 1:7-8 NKJV). We cannot pray to God and doubt Him at the same time! “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us” (1 John 5:14 NKJV). According to Acts 9:9, 11, Saul of Tarsus spent three days praying and fasting in blindness, but he had no confidence that he was saved until he was told to “Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16 NKJV). In Acts 9:18, “he arose and was baptized.” Are you sure you’re saved?

5-11-2015 What God Is Able To Do

John the Baptist told the Jews, “do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones” (Matthew 3:9). Under the Gospel of Christ, Jews, “if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again” (Romans 11:23). And to Christians, “God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8). God is able to by-pass the Jews, save obedient Israelites, help Christians serve Him. The issue is never what God is able to do – but what are you willing to do? Jesus said, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16).

5-13-2015 Who Is A “Christian?” #2

Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul. And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch” (Acts 11:25-26 NKJV). Saul of Tarsus was one of those who was called a “Christian.” Saul had not been saved on the road to Damascus, for Jesus had told him to “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do” (Acts 9:6 NKJV). After 3 days, Ananias told Saul to “Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16 NKJV), then “he arose and was baptized” (Acts 9:18 NKJV). Saul was a “Christian.” Are you a “Christian?”

Saul became the Apostle Paul who wrote, “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?” (Romans 6:3-4 NKJV). Since baptism entered the death of Christ Jesus, Paul did not believe he had been saved by prayer before he was baptized or that baptism began his “newness of life.” He believed as he was told, that in baptism, his sins were washed away (Acts 22:16). Paul was a “Christian,” are you?

4-17-2015 “We have found the Messiah” (John 1:41) – No One Spoke Like Him

At age 12, Jesus “in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers” (Luke 2:46-47 NKJV). As an adult, the very first time Jesus taught in His home synagogue, “all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth” (Luke 4:22 NKJV). No religious teacher, preacher, prophet, or leader has ever taught like Jesus did. “Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, ‘Why have you not brought Him?’ The officers answered, ‘No man ever spoke like this Man!'” (John 7:45-46 NKJV). Does your preacher teach, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16 NKJV). Why not? Jesus did!

3-31-2015 Who's “Killing Jesus?” #2 – Keepers of Moses' Law

Saul was told “Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’ (Acts 22:16 NKJV), “and he arose and was baptized” (Acts 9:18 NKJV). He wrote, “I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain” (Galatians 2:21 NKJV). John said, “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17 NKJV). People who claim to be saved by keeping the Law of Moses, including the 10 Commandments, are, in effect, ignoring Jesus’ death, which removed the Law of Moses so that He could teach: “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16 NKJV).

(#91) The Proverbs of Solomon 15:3-God Knows More Than “TSA” and “NSA”

Since God Created humans, only God can provide specific understanding of human behavior. God gave Solomon Divine Wisdom (1 Kings Chapters 3 and 10) to explain what and why behavior is as it is, and Proverbs 10:1-24:34 are randomly written, as if they were Solomon’s judgments about individual cases brought to him, or simply God-given explanations about life. New Testament passages may help see the continuation of Wisdom offered through Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 15:3: “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good.”

This is not saying God’s “eyes” are everywhere, but they see “in every place” all the behaviors of mankind, both “the evil and the good.” One thread throughout the Scriptures is that God is Omniscient, that is, He sees everything at all times. When “Big Brother’s” TSA in airports and NSA in communications invade personal space as they do, how can anyone question God’s complete knowledge of all that happens on the Earth? To say “God wound up the universe and then sat back and watched From a Distance (as a song used to teach, and Deists believe)” is a complete denial of the Word of God, which is a record of God’s dealings with mankind since the Creation!

In the Garden of Eden, after Adam and Eve sinned, they “hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden” (Genesis 3:8), but God called them out (Genesis 3:9-13). When Abraham proved his faith, but was stopped before he actually offered his son, Isaac, on the altar, and offered “a ram caught in a thicket” for a burnt offering “instead of his son,” he “called the name of the place, The-LORD-will-provide” (Genesis 22:1-14). Israelites sinned while Moses was in Mount Sinai receiving God’s Law, “And the LORD said to Moses, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people!’” (Exodus 32:9). King Hezekiah was “sick and near death” and God told His prophet, Isaiah, to say, “Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you” (2 Kings 20:5).

God can also see all that is done that is good. Upon completion of His Creation, “God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good” (Genesis 1:31). Upon Jonah’s preaching “Repent or Perish,” the King of Nineveh led his people in repentance, and, “Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it” (Jonah 3:10).

Other proverbs teach this: “For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, And He ponders all his paths” (Proverbs 5:21); “Hell and Destruction are before the LORD; So how much more the hearts of the sons of men” (Proverbs 15:11); “The hearing ear and the seeing eye, The LORD has made them both” (Proverbs 20:12). Since God created “the seeing eye” of humans, doesn’t it follow that God is a “seeing” God? “He who planted the ear, shall He not hear? He who formed the eye, shall He not see?” (Psalm 94:9)

“’Am I a God near at hand,’ says the LORD, ‘And not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him? says the LORD; ‘Do I not fill heaven and earth?’ says the LORD” (Jeremiah 23:23-24).

This major doctrine about God is summarized in the New Testament, for Jesus taught that our charitable deeds, prayers, and fasting, that are done in “secret” before God, and not for show “before men,” would be seen by our “Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly” (Matthew 6:4,6,18). “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13).

Since nothing is hidden from God, why hide our evils behind husband, wife, children, house, job, friends, nighttime, dim lights, doors, walls, or any other supposed barrier? God know these, our consciences know these, and more often than not, some other people know them as well. Truly, “Some men’s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later. Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden” (1 Timothy 5:24-25). Let God cleanse your soul from hidden sins, and “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38).

All Scriptures and comments are based upon the New King James Version, unless otherwise noted.

A New Beginning

A new beginning would be when one is baptized into Christ (Galations 3:26-27) he or she becomes a “new creation” in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). A transformation or metamorphosis takes place (Romans 12:2), the “old man” of sin is crucified (Romans 6:6) and the “new man” of righteousness emerges (Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10).

I completed my obedience to the Lord in …

I completed my obedience to the Lord in the baptistry of the Hickerson Station Church of Christ in 1963 by Ronnie Wilkins. I can’t remember if it was in the spring, summer or fall, but it wasn’t cold. Ronnie was an amazing preacher, and it’s sad, but I don’t really know whatever happened to him. I was 12-years old. Like Weylan, my father was a preacher. Yep. Tough being the son of a preacher-man, isn’t it, brother?
