(#178) The Proverbs of Solomon 26:2-Don’t Fear Useless Cursing

Since God Created humans, only God can provide specific understanding of human behavior. God gave Solomon Divine Wisdom (1 Kings Chapters 3 and 10) to explain what and why behavior is as it is, and Proverbs 10:1-24:34 are randomly written, as if they were Solomon’s judgments about individual cases brought to him, or simply God-given explanations about life. New Testament passages may help see the continuation of Wisdom offered through Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 26:2: “Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, So a curse without cause shall not alight.”

The “flitting sparrow” and “flying swallow” hardly ever seem to use their feet because they are darting around. This illustration from real life shows the reason one should not worry when cursed “without cause” – “it shall not alight.”

Useless curses include those made:

(1) using false gods: as Goliath did to David before the giant came down: “So the Philistine said to David, ‘Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?’ And the Philistine cursed David by his gods” (1 Samuel 17:43). Those curses did nothing to David. So, also, are the “curses” made from voo-doo, sorcery, witchcraft, or any other false religion: “And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time’” (1 Kings 19:1-2). This never happened to Elijah!

(2) falsely using Jehovah God, as with the expression, “Godd__n you.” Only God can damn or condemn anyone, and He has stated who that is in His Bible: “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3:18-19); “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16); “Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!” (James 5:9). People cannot command God’s condemnation upon anyone God has not condemned!

(3) from a heart full of wickedness, for God can turn them back upon the wicked person who said them: “His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is trouble and iniquity” (Psalm 10:7, read verses 2-11); “As he loved cursing, so let it come to him; As he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him” (Psalm 109:17, read verses 6-20); “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness” (Romans 3:14, read verses 10-18).

The only condemnation anyone should fear is from God, and He has cleared the way for everyone to be saved by their obedience, for He: “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4); is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9); sent Jesus, who said: “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). Save yourself from the curse with cause!

(#147) The Proverbs of Solomon 20:20-The Damnable Generation

Since God Created humans, only God can provide specific understanding of human behavior. God gave Solomon Divine Wisdom (1 Kings Chapters 3 and 10) to explain what and why behavior is as it is, and Proverbs 10:1-24:34 are randomly written, as if they were Solomon’s judgments about individual cases brought to him, or simply God-given explanations about life. New Testament passages may help see the continuation of Wisdom offered through Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 20:20: “Whoever curses his father or his mother, His lamp will be put out in deep darkness.”

Nothing on earth equals the depravity of a child who disrespects, abuses, or condemns his/her father and/or mother! A father and a mother are necessary to give each individual life. Something is seriously missing from the moral compass of anyone who has no regard for those who have given the most precious gift humanly possible: life! It is horrible to see it so widespread that it characterizes a generation. “There is a generation that curses its father, And does not bless its mother” (Proverbs 30:11). A generation who believes no matter whatever they want, they are entitled to, they can have it, they have no gratitude for it, will not “’Honor your father and mother,’ which is the first commandment with promise: ‘that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth’” (Ephesians 6:2-3). Instead of “The Greatest Generation,” they will be known as “The Damnable Generation!”

Under Moses’ Law, such people did not deserve to live, for disrespect of parents has created a child’s heart of disrespect for all other authority, even God! “And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death” (Exodus 21:17); “For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him” (Leviticus 20:9).

There is no death penalty in the Law of Christ, but there is an eternal condemnation for those who never repent of this attitude. “Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord” (Colossians 3:20). “But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust” (1 Timothy 1:8-11). Some of the worst sins ever committed by humans are not only violations of God’s Law, and “murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers” are listed with them, but this also is contrary to common sensibilities in every culture on earth! The Apostle John wrote that hatred in the heart can lead to murder (1 John 3:15), so a child’s hatred of either or both parents produces cursing of them, or even murdering them! Many mass murders began with the slaughter of a parent or parents.

Repent, before your children do the same to you.
