Daily Decision

Rising Joy by Vicki Matheny

This is what the Lord says: “The heavens are my throne and the earth is my footstool. Where then is the house you will build for me? Where is the place where I will rest? My hand made them; that is how they came to be,” says the Lord. I show special favor to the humble and contrite, who respect what I have to say. Isaiah 66.1-2

God is amazing! He is the creator of everything in this universe. He saved the best for last, humans.

God wanted a relationship with his creation. He would walk in the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. He gave only one rule to be obeyed: do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He placed the tree in the middle of the garden, not in some obscure corner where it would be hard to find. Every day, man would have to look at the tree and make a decision, to obey or not to obey.

That decision continues today: to obey or not to obey. In essence, to respect what God has to say through his son, Jesus. He calls upon us to deny ourselves daily, and take up our cross and follow him, Luke 9.23. It is our choice to die to our own selfish desires and follow him or not.

What will your choice be? Will you show respect for God?

Paralyzed by indecision: 1 Kings 18.21

“Elijah approached all the people and said, ‘How long are you going to be paralyzed by indecision? If the Lord is the true God, then follow him, but if Baal is, follow him!’ But the people did not say a word.”

1 Kings 18.21

The people of Israel desired to have both God and Baal. Elijah brought them to a point of decision. They must choose. The Lord would not allow them not to choose.

Do I want both God and some desire of mine which has become my idol? Am I suspended wanting both to serve God and to serve sin? No one can serve two masters.

7-2-2015 Born Sinners?

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 NKJV). These continuing actions are violations of God’s Law. Are babies born stealing? Do babies come out of their mothers reviling, that is, using coarse, vulgar language? Are babies born “extortioners,” stealing by force and violence? Certainly not! Such sinful behavior must be learned as they grow up. Just so with “homosexuals” and “sodomites.” No one is born this way, it must be learned as they grow up. Sin is a decision in life, and God “now commands all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30 NKJV).

6-12-2015 The Time Is Now

When their government oppressed God’s people, the Prophet Elijah asked the timid Israelites, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him” (1 Kings 18:21 NKJV). Good people cannot survive in a society (or world!) by shrinking away from the inevitable choice: good or evil. Joshua challenged his people: “choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15 NKJV). Paul wrote there will be “the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel” (Romans 2:16 NKJV). There will be “multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!” (Joel 3:14 NKJV). The “cowardly” will burn in Hell with “all liars” and sinners (Revelation 21:8).

(#141) The Proverbs of Solomon 19:16-Do or Die

Since God Created humans, only God can provide specific understanding of human behavior. God gave Solomon Divine Wisdom (1 Kings Chapters 3 and 10) to explain what and why behavior is as it is, and Proverbs 10:1-24:34 are randomly written, as if they were Solomon’s judgments about individual cases brought to him, or simply God-given explanations about life. New Testament passages may help see the continuation of Wisdom offered through Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 19:16: “He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of his ways will die.”

The only way to keep (save) one’s “soul” is to keep (obey) God’s commandment. The only other choice one has is to lose one’s soul by refusing to keep God’s commandment!

In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were given a charge with consequence: “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, ‘Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die’” (Genesis 2:16-17). When they ate what was forbidden, they “died,” since death is a separation from life and they were separated from the “tree of life” (Genesis 3:22-24). When they left Eden, God gave them a way to worship Him acceptably (Genesis 4:3-7), and Abel did but Cain did not (Hebrews 11:4).

Those who lived under Moses’ Law had the same decision placed before them. “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess. But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess. I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them” (Deuteronomy 30:15-20).

Jesus Christ summed it up in His first recorded sermon: “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:13-14). The Apostle Peter pointed out the better of the two choices when he said: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Saul of Tarsus was told: “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16).

The Judgment Day will be simple, also: “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10).
