Sin, faith, duty

Some think that Luke has collected three separate sayings of Jesus in Lk 17.1-10, with little connection between them. That assumes much.

Jesus might well have said these three things in this order. Even if he did not, it also assumes that Luke is clumsy.

No such assumptions are needed. There can be seen a clear connection among the three points.

  1. The business of the kingdom is forgiveness of sin, 1-4. Don’t be a cause of sin, 1-2. Be a cause of forgiveness, 3-4.
  2. For that forgiving spirit, the apostles felt the need for a greater faith, 5-6. In one sense, Jesus anticipates Nike: Just do it. Faith is to be exercised. For it to grow it must be put into action.
  3. Duty in the kingdom deserves no special praise, 7-10, but it must be done. What is this duty? Again, seeking forgiveness for all.

That dead body over which the vultures circle

From stumbling blocks to vultures, Luke 17 presents vigorous teaching by the Master. As today’s NT reading (jump here for the plan), it reminds us that the faith is not a happy-go-lucky lark, but a determined, focused, and deliberate path we follow, guided as we are by the truth of Christ.

People in this world go along doing their own thing, but the shadow of judgment ever looms. Hence, our task of proclamation will include judgment, as we root out sin among ourselves, exercise our faith, do what is but our duty to do, and constantly turn back to the Lord to throw ourselves at his feet in praise and thanksgiving. Because we are not a part of that dead body over which the vultures circle.

TFT: Day's Results

OUR life may be food to us, or may, if we have it so, be poison, but one or the other it must be. Whichever and whatever it is, beyond all doubt it is eminently real. So merely as the day and the night alternately follow one another, does every day when it yields to darkness, and every night when it passes into dawn, bear with it its own tale of the results which it has silently wrought upon each of us for evil or for good. The day of diligence, duty and devotion leaves it richer than it found us, richer sometimes, and even commonly, in our circumstances; richer always in ourselves.

–Wm. Ewart Gladstone.

(John 10:10)  “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

(John 10:11)  “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

Organize In 2011?

How will I organize in 2011? The same way I organized in 2010. Keep my bills organized as to date due, my personal files in alphabetical order, and prioritize my many other duties, one day at a time. I don’t use a planner, pda, or anything else. Mostly, just keep it in my head.
