What does the Bible say about being ready when Jesus comes

By: Douglas M. Williams, Sr.

“He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:9-11).

Jesus is preparing mansion in heaven for His faithful people and is coming back to take us there (John 14:1-3). But when He returns He will come as our judge, and not as our Savior as He was when He came the first time (Matthew 25:31-46).

When Jesus comes again it will be unexpected as a thief in the night, and the earth will be burned up (2 Peter 3:10-11). The resurrection will take place (John 5:28-29), and the Christians, with those still living, will be changed and receive an incorruptible body (1 Corinthians 15:51-54). Then all Christians shall be caught up together “in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

We must realize the necessity of preparing for eternity in this life because there will not be a second chance when Jesus comes again. As the Bible teaches, we must be obedient now because we are told, “now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).

To be forgiven of sins we must obey Jesus by faith, repentance, confession, and baptism, and then live the life of a Christian as a follower of Jesus. The only way we can be blessed eternally is to “die in the Lord” (Revelation 14:13). The only way to be in the Lord is to be baptized into Christ (Romans 6:3-6; Galatians 3:26-27).

When Jesus comes again suddenly we shall be judged and rewarded according to the life we have lived (Hebrews 9:27). We dare not delay obedience to the gospel of Christ.

“The clock of life is wound but once, and no one has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only time you own; live, love, toil with a will. Place no trust in the morrow, for the clock may then be still.”

The tragedy of waiting for tomorrow to obey Jesus is seen when we realize that Christ may come today!

Seeing the Temple in Jerusalem, Jesus predicted its destruction when He said, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down” (Mark 13:2 NKJV).  The Apostles asked, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?” (Mark 13:4 NKJV).  Jesus listed many “signs:” “wars and rumors of wars,” “earthquakes in various places,” “famines and troubles” (Mark 13: 7-8 NKJV).  Jesus linked “tribulation” connected to “’the abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet” connected to Jerusalem’s destruction, which occurred in A.D.70.  All of these “signs” were for “this generation” which would “by no means pass away till all these things take place” (Mark 13:30 NKJV).   None of these signs had anything whatsoever to do with predicting the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ!

After Jesus gave “signs” preceding the destruction of Jerusalem in Mark 13:1-31, which were fulfilled in A. D. 70, He mentioned another occurrence, for which there are no preceding signs.  “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is” (Mark 13:32-33 NKJV)1) The “signs” pointing to the destruction of Jerusalem cannot be pointing to “that day and hour” which not even “angels in Heaven, nor the Son” can predict! 2) The Second Coming of Jesus Christ has absolutely no preceding signs to warn of its preeminence.  3) Jesus told His disciples that they “do not know when the time is.” There is nothing in the Bible, Old or New Testaments, that point to the time of His Second Coming.

Christians should expect to be “persecuted,” because Jesus said, “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you” (John 15:20 NKJV).  Though the Apostle Paul was persecuted, he said, “I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:11-13 NKJV).  What Paul wrote about “evil men and imposters” growing “worse and worse,” he spoke of the natural conflict that always manifests itself between Christians who are trying to get better and better, and sinners who are going in the other direction!  Nothing he said was a “sign” to indicate Jesus’ 2nd Coming!  Sinners don’t improve without Jesus Christ.
