10-13-2017 What God Is Able To Do

John the Baptist told the Jews, “do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones” (Matthew 3:9 NKJV). Under the Gospel of Christ, Jews, “if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again” (Romans 11:23 NKJV). And to Christians, “God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8 NKJV). God is able to by-pass the Jews, save obedient Israelites, help Christians serve Him. The issue is never what God is able to do – but what are you willing to do? Jesus said, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16 NKJV).

8-7-2017 Today’s Jews Are Not God’s Chosen People

In Antioch of Pisidia, Paul preached Jesus Christ: “through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses” (Acts 13:38-39 NKJV). “The law of Moses” was given only to the Israelites (Deuteronomy 5:2-3) and only until Jesus Christ came: “[the Law] was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made” (Galatians 3:19 NKJV). That promised “Seed” is Christ (Galatians 3:16). Concerning Moses’ Law, Jesus “has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14). Since Jesus’ death, none of the Jews can claim to be God’s Chosen People. God said, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Luke 9:35 NKJV).

7-6-2017 The Seed Promised To Abraham

“For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, ‘In Isaac your seed shall be called.’ That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed” (Romans 9:6-8 NKJV). Everyone who thinks Jews, or Muslims, are physical descendants of Abraham and entitled to promises made to them are seriously mistaken. First, no one can prove that they are physical descendants, since all the genealogical records were destroyed when Romans destroyed Jerusalem in A. D. 70. Secondly, God’s promise was not about Jews or Muslims, but to Christians. “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ…And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:26-29 NKJV).

4-20-2017 God Has No Future Land Promise

There is no prophecy of Scripture about the Jews returning to their Promised Land that has not already been fulfilled!  Jerusalem was destroyed in the Old Testament, it was “to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her Sabbaths. As long as she lay desolate she kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years” (2 Chronicles 36:21 NKJV).  God used Babylonians to remove His people for 70 years.  That time ended, “in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing” (2 Chronicles 36:22 NKJV).  No New Testament prophecy promises the Jews that land, again.

10-7-2016 There Are No Judeo-Christians

“Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law” (Galatians 5:2-3 NKJV). Clearly, Christians must not go back to Moses for their religious duties.  There are people who claim to preach Jesus, believe in Jesus, and obey Jesus, but add the obligations of Moses.  They must: 1) be like Jews, keeping all of Moses: 10 commandments, fleshly circumcision, animal sacrifices, religious feasts and days; and 2) know their “Christian faith” amounts to nothing!  Paul said, “if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain” (Galatians 2:21 NKJV).  Jesus took Moses’ Law “out of the way, having nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14 NKJV).  Celebrating any of that “old law” today rejects the cross of God’s Only Begotten Son!

8-4-2015 Who Is Antichrist?

Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son” (1 John 2:22 NKJV). Muslims are preparing a world-wide caliphate for “al-Mahdi [who] is ‘the rightly-guided one’ who, according to Islamic Hadiths (traditions), will come before the end of time to make the entire world Muslim” (MahdiWatch.org). Jews are holding their ground, awaiting the imminent coming of the “Mashiach.” John the Baptist sent men to ask Jesus, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” (Luke 7:20 NKJV). After performing miracles, Jesus said, “blessed is he who is not offended because of Me” (Luke 7:23 NKJV). All who are looking for some other “rightly-guided one,” or “Messiah,” are denying “that Jesus is the Christ.” They are “antichrist!”

7-20-2015 Are Jews Abraham’s “Seed?”

Why do people listen to what God says at first, but not last? “Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?” (James 2:21-22 NKJV). God told Abraham, “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice” (Genesis 22:18 NKJV). That “seed” was NOT the Jews, but Jesus Christ. “Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, ‘And to seeds,’ as of many, but as of one, ‘And to your Seed,’ who is Christ” (Galatians 3:16 NKJV). Everyone who teaches the Jews were Abraham’s promised “seed” are denying God’s inspired Word in the New Testament!

(#137) The Proverbs of Solomon 18:19-Can You Forgive Your Brother?

Since God Created humans, only God can provide specific understanding of human behavior. God gave Solomon Divine Wisdom (1 Kings Chapters 3 and 10) to explain what and why behavior is as it is, and Proverbs 10:1-24:34 are randomly written, as if they were Solomon’s judgments about individual cases brought to him, or simply God-given explanations about life. New Testament passages may help see the continuation of Wisdom offered through Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 18:19: “A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a castle.”

Contentious statements that divide brethren are “like the bars of a castle,” that is, they defensively fortify brothers from each other. Enemies can be converted and changed more easily than a relative, and it seems the nearer the relationship, the more difficult it is to effect that change! The first brothers, Cain and Abel, were separated by Cain’s anger that his brother obeyed what was right (Genesis 4:1-12; Hebrews 11:4) but Cain was evil (1 John 3:11-12). Jacob and Esau were separated by Esau’s profaning his birthright (inheritance, Genesis 25:29-34), Jacob’s deception to receive that birthright (Genesis 27:1-46), and Esau’s bitterness and hatred for his brother. They were separated for years before they could reconcile (Genesis 33:1-15), but reconcile they did! Since the Jews come from Jacob, and the so-called “Palestinians” come from Esau, the modern-day Middle East should read the Bible and reconcile their differences as their progenitors did! Brethren in the flesh can be meaner, more violent, and destructive to each other than their enemies who are not related!

Spiritual members in a church of Christ can become as bitter as Cain, and hateful as Esau, toward their brethren. The reason is the same, they have developed “an evil heart of unbelief” and departed from the living God (Hebrews 3:12). Their contentious words become “bars” to keep them inside their castle of ugliness. “Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him” (1 John 3:13-15). This brings eternal damnation upon the contentious brother. No amount of attendances, giving, singing, or prayers can disguise the real intent of wrong brethren. “We love Him because He first loved us. If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also” (1 John 4:19-21).

The message of Jesus Christ, to His churches of Christ, is that of “reconciliation.” “Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

Will the Holy Spirit Say this of You?

Every time I read Acts 13:27, I can’t help but to think of all those who are guilty of this same sentiment expressed by Paul to the Jews in his day. “For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him” (ESV).

The Scriptures are read every Sabbath, but those present, because of certain assumptions, refused to hear anything from the Lord (cf. John 5:39-47). Today, we have much the same. It is easy to encourage people to read the Scripture, but at the same time it has a challenging quality associated with it. Just recently I had a discussion with two women about their disappointment in and with “church.” Their disappointments stemmed from the failings of people within the community they spoke. I encouraged both to go to the Scripture and put every word that is spoken (in a religious, biblical context) to the test. The passages that I encouraged them to look at were John 12:48; Acts 17:11; 1 John 4:1-6; and Jude 3 (among others). What they will do with that, I do not know. It was easy to encourage, but there is a challenge in getting them to do so. Hopefully, they will search. I know one did because she said as much.

If we would not be guilty of exactly that which Paul said the Jews of his day were, then it is incumbent on us to search the Scriptures daily, not only to measure everything the preacher says, but also to understand the Lord’s word and implement it into our lives. It would be sad if the Holy Spirit said of you, what Paul said of the Jews in his day.

The Arrogance of the Catholic Church

“Pope Benedict XVI has made a sweeping exoneration of the Jewish people for the death of Jesus Christ, tackling one of the most controversial issues in Christianity in a new book. In ‘Jesus of Nazareth – Part II’ excerpts released Wednesday, Benedict explains biblically and theologically why there is no basis in Scripture for the argument that the Jewish people as a whole were responsible for Jesus’ death” (Decatur Herald & Review, 3/3/2011, A8).

In case the wording of this story might be suspect, in 1965, the Second Vatican Council document, Nostra Aetate, declared that the death of the Lord “could not be attributed to the Jews as a whole at the time or today.” In fact, according to the pope’s study, it was only a few Temple leaders and a small group of supporters who were primarily responsible for the Lord’s death.

And Peter said, “…this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men)…. Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified” (Acts 2:23 and 36).

What may be said about this? In one respect it is true that the sins of the individual had brought forth our Lord into this world and He, willingly, went to the cross on our behalf as our Savior. On the other hand, let it not be minimized what Peter said occurred. The “house of David” sent our Lord to the cross as a criminal!

If the report in the newspaper is accurate, the Catholic Church is wrong – as is often the case.

Concerning God’s call of Abraham (Hebrew…

Concerning God’s call of Abraham (Hebrews 11:8; Genesis 12:1-2): “There was an immediate response. The participle ‘called’ is in the present tense, suggesting that no sooner was the call given than it was obeyed. ‘He obeyed the call while…it was still sounding in his ears.’”
